Yoga and pilates waiver template

A starter waiver template for yoga and pilates studios covering class participation, self-pacing, pregnancy disclosure, and hands-on adjustment consent.

What a yoga or pilates waiver template needs to cover

A yoga waiver is not the same as a gym waiver. The risks are different, the self-pacing language matters more, and there are disclosures (like pregnancy and postpartum status) that don't come up in a typical fitness facility agreement. This template is built specifically for yoga studios, pilates studios, barre classes, and similar wellness-oriented movement businesses.

Why yoga and pilates studios use waivers

Yoga and pilates involve stretching, balance work, inversions, and postures that can aggravate existing injuries or cause new ones. Even a gentle restorative class carries some risk of strain. A signed waiver makes sure the participant understands that before they step on the mat, and gives the studio a record of informed, voluntary acceptance.

Studios that offer hands-on adjustments have an extra reason to document consent. This template mentions adjustments in the activity description, but many studios add a separate opt-in checkbox so students can explicitly agree to or decline physical contact during class.

How this differs from a general fitness waiver

There's a dedicated pregnancy, postpartum, and injury disclosure section. It asks the participant to let the instructor know if they're pregnant, recovering from childbirth, or managing a condition that affects their movement. It's not a medical screening. It's a prompt to communicate so the instructor can offer modifications.

The self-pacing section is also more prominent than what you'd see in a gym waiver. It asks the participant to move at their own pace, stop anything that feels unsafe, and take responsibility for working within their own limits. That matters in a class setting where one instructor is leading a group and can't watch every person individually.

The assumption-of-risk language names risks specific to yoga and pilates: dizziness, aggravation of prior injuries, muscle strain from deep stretching, and falls during balance postures.

What to customize before publishing

If your studio offers specialized classes like hot yoga, aerial yoga, reformer pilates, or prenatal sessions, update the activity description to name those specifically. The more accurately the waiver describes what happens in your studio, the stronger the document is.

If you offer hands-on adjustments, consider adding a separate acknowledgment or opt-out checkbox rather than burying the consent in the class description. WaiverChaser's waiver builder lets you add custom checkboxes for exactly this.

Have your version reviewed by a licensed attorney before you publish it. Enforceability varies by state, and a few minutes of legal review can make the difference between a document that holds up and one that doesn't.

Getting waivers signed before class starts

Most yoga and pilates studios send the waiver link when a student books their first class or registers for an intro package. The student signs on their phone before they arrive, and the front desk can confirm the signature at check-in without slowing anyone down. You can also post a QR code in the lobby for walk-ins.
